Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is all-powerful, an ocean of mercy, who knows what is inside every heart.

Nanak says: all day and all night I sing the praises of the One, and I ask for the One's gift.

The best thing to ask for, all day long, is more nearness to the One.
The deeper layer

Day and night you can sing the praises of the merciful One and ask for the One's gift.

Karunaa mai antarjaamee: full of mercy, the knower of hearts. Aath pahar naanak jas gaavai: through all eight watches, Nanak sings the praises. Aath pahar, eight watches, is the old way of counting a whole day and night. Maangan ka-o har daan: asking for the One's gift. The one request is more of the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small way you could carry a little wonder through your whole day?
