Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
This is why, O mind, you should remember the One; keep the One in mind.
The saints and the Vedas, the old holy books, say the path is steep and hard. And you are dizzy with clinging and burning with the fever of ego.
Those who are soaked in poor, passing Maya, and dizzy with it, suffer the pain of clinging.
Remember the One, O mind, because the road is steep, and clinging and ego make you dizzy.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Here the pause and the first verse come together.
Taan tay jaap manaa har jaap: so, O mind, remember the One. Jo sant bayd kahat panth gaakhro: the saints and the Vedas say the path is steep and hard. Moh magan ahan taap: lost in clinging, hot with the fever of ego. Jo raatay maatay sang bapuree maa-i-aa: those soaked in poor, passing Maya feel the ache of clinging.
Picture hiking up a steep trail with a backpack stuffed full of things you could not leave behind. Every step gets heavier.
What helps you feel steady when things feel hard or overwhelming?
