God is Kind and Compassionate, the Treasure of Mercy; servant Nanak is the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||2||2||47||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People try and try, with every kind of effort, but the One is met only when the One shows mercy.

The One is kind and loving, a treasure of mercy. Nanak says: I, Your servant, am the dust at the feet of the saints.

Grace cannot be forced — only welcomed when it comes.
The deeper layer

The One is met as a gift of mercy, and a humble heart is open to it.

Jatan jatan anik upaav: effort upon effort, plan upon plan. Ta-o mili-o ja-o kirpaa-ee: the One is met when mercy comes. Mercy is a gift that is always present; you open to it. Think of sunlight in the morning. You cannot pull the sun up, but you can open the curtains.

Jan naanak sant raynaa-ee: Guru Arjan, signing as Nanak, calls himself the dust at the feet of holy people, the lowest and humblest place there is.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you can only receive, not make happen?
