Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O mother, I remember the One: Raam, Raam, Raam.

Without the One, there is no other at all.

With every breath, night and day, I think of the One's lotus feet.

When something matters most, you carry it with every breath.
The deeper layer

With every breath, day and night, your heart can rest on the One, and there is no other.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Maa-ee simrat raam raam raam: O mother, I remember the One, again and again. Prabh binaa naahee hor: without the One, there is no other. Charnaarbind means lotus feet, a loving picture of the One's nearness, the way a small child holds on close at a parent's feet. Saasan nis bhor: with each breath, through the night and into the morning.

A Question to Sit With

What is always in the back of your mind, even when you're busy?
