Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 128
Verse 12 of 16

Awake in Peace, Asleep in Peace

gurmukh naam paraapat hovai.
The Gurmukh receives the Naam.
sehjay jaagai sehjay sovai.
In intuitive peace he wakes, and in intuitive peace he sleeps.
gurmukh naam samaa-ay samaavai naanak naam Dhi-aa-ee hay. ||12||
The Gurmukh is immersed and absorbed in the Naam; Nanak meditates on the Naam. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who turns toward the Guru receives the Naam. In easy peace they wake, and in easy peace they sleep.

They melt right into the Naam. Nanak says: I meditate on the Naam.

When your center is steady, both waking and sleeping are peaceful.
The deeper layer

sehjay jaagai sehjay sovai — waking and sleeping both in sahaj, the natural ease of the settled soul. It is one of Gurbani's gentlest pictures of steadiness: the same calm holds you through every part of the day and night.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you fall asleep in peace?
