Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 128
Verse 8 of 16

The Gift Given, Not Grabbed

jis bhaavai tis aapay day-ay.
The Lord Himself blesses those with whom He is pleased.
gurmukh naam padaarath lay-ay.
The Gurmukh receives the wealth of the Naam.
aapay kirpaa karay naam dayvai naanak naam samaa-ee hay. ||8||
When the Lord grants His Grace, He bestows the Naam; Nanak is immersed and absorbed in the Naam. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One gives to whoever pleases the One. The one who turns toward the Guru receives the treasure of the Naam.

In kindness the One gives the Naam. Nanak says: I melt right into the Naam.

Grace is a gift you become open to, not a prize you win.
The deeper layer

jis bhaavai tis aapay day-ay — the One gives to whom the One is pleased. This is grace, not merit: the Name (naam padaarath, the treasure) is bestowed, and the receiver merges (samaaee) into it rather than possessing it.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between earning something and receiving a gift?
