Verse 3 of 5

You Are the Water, I Am the Fish

ਸਰਬ ਧਾਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਨ ਇਕ ਬਿਨਉ ਦੀਨਾ ॥
sarab Dhaaran partipaaran ik bin-o deenaa.
You support and cherish all; I am meek and humble - this is my only prayer.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਜਲ ਹਮ ਮੀਨਾ ॥੨॥
tumree biDh tum hee jaanhu tum jal ham meenaa. ||2||
You alone know Your Way; You are the water, and I am the fish. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You hold and feed everything; I have just one small prayer.

You alone know how it all works — You are the water, and I am the little fish who cannot live a moment outside You.

You are the fish, and the One is the water you live in.
The deeper layer

You are the water, and I am the fish.

Sarab dhaaran partipaaran — the One holds up and feeds everything. Ik bin-o deenaa — I am humble, and I have one prayer. Tumree bidh tum hee jaanhu — only You know Your own ways.

Tum jal ham meenaa — You are the water, I am the fish. A fish lives in water every moment. It breathes it, swims in it, and cannot last a moment outside it. The soul lives in the One the same way.

A Question to Sit With

What do you depend on so much you couldn't live without it?
