The Unchanging, Unseen One

ਅਟਲ ਅਖਇਓ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
atal akhi-o dayvaa mohan alakh apaaraa.
You are eternal and unchanging, imperishable, invisible and infinite, O divine fascinating Lord.
ਦਾਨੁ ਪਾਵਉ ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੇਨੁ ਦਾਸਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੨੨॥
daan paava-o santaa sang naanak rayn daasaaraa. ||4||6||22||
Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Society of the Saints, and the dust of the feet of Your slaves. ||4||6||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You never change, never fade, and can't be caught by the eye — boundless and wonderful.

Nanak says, bless me with the Sangat, and let me be the dust under the feet of those who serve You.

Ask for the Sangat and a humble heart.
The deeper layer

The One never changes, and the prayer is for the Sangat.

Atal akhi-o dayvaa mohan alakh apaaraa — the bright, heart-winning One never moves, never wears out, cannot be seen, and has no end.

Daan paava-o santaa sang — let me receive the gift of the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Rayn daasaaraa — the dust of the feet of those who serve. Dust is the humblest thing there is. Asking to be dust means asking to stay humble near people who love the One.

A Question to Sit With

Which people help you remember the One?
