Living By Letting Go

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
gur parsaadee jeevat marai mar jeevai sabad kamaa-ay.
By Guru's Grace, the mortal dies in life, and by so dying, lives to practice the Word of the Shabad.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਜਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੩॥
mukat du-aaraa so-ee paa-ay je vichahu aap gavaa-ay. ||3||
He alone finds the Door of Salvation, who eradicates self-conceit from within himself. ||3||

In plain words

By the Guru's grace, a person lets the proud self die while still living, and so comes alive, living by the Word.

Only the one who clears out self-pride from within finds the door to freedom.

Letting the show-off self go quiet is where living begins.
The deeper layer

Letting the proud self go quiet is where living by the Word begins.

Jeevat marai means dying while living. It is the ego that goes quiet; the body stays alive and well. Mar jeevai — dying that way, you come alive. Aap gavaa-ay means losing the self-pride inside, and that opens mukat duaaraa, the door of freedom. It leaves you lighter and more alive.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt freer after letting go of needing to look important?
