In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

What kind of devotion will bring me to meet my Beloved, the Master of my breath of life?

In the Sangat, I have reached the highest place.

How long shall I keep washing these dirty clothes?

How long shall I stay asleep?

The company you keep can wake your heart to what is true.
The deeper layer

You meet the Beloved, the breath of your life, in the Sangat.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. Milat pi-aaro praan naath kavan bhagat tay: through what devotion do I meet my Beloved, praan naath, the Master of my breath? The answer: in the saadhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — the highest place is reached.

Then come two gentle questions. How long shall I wash these dirty clothes? Think of the habits that keep staining the heart. How long shall I stay asleep? The sleeper is called to wake up and rise. In Raag Malaar, the raag of the rains, the heart's weather begins to clear.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel most awake and most like your true self?
