The Servants of the Name

ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਪਵਣੈ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥
agan bimb pavnai kee banee teen naam kay daasaa.
Fire, water and air make up the world; these three are the slaves of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
One who does not chant the Naam is a thief, dwelling in the fortress of the five thieves. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Fire, water and air make up the world, and all three serve the Naam.

Whoever does not say the Naam is a thief, living in the fort of the five thieves inside: wanting, anger, greed, clinging and pride.

Even fire, water, and air quietly serve the One, and remembering frees you from the five inner troublemakers.
The deeper layer

Fire, water and air all serve the Naam, and forgetting it leaves you living among five inner thieves.

Agan bimb pavnai kee banee means "the world is made of fire, water, and air." These three are naam kay daasaa, "servants of the Naam." Picture it. The sun rises, rain falls, and wind blows, all doing their part. Creation itself is full of devotion.

Then the verse turns to us. Someone who forgets the Naam is called taskar, a thief. That person lives in kot panchaasaa, the fort of the five thieves. The five are wanting too much, anger, greed, clinging, and pride.

Think of five noisy kids who have taken over the TV remote. They pick every show, and you never get a turn. Remembering the Naam is how you take the remote back. You stop being ruled by those five inner pulls.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the five, wanting, anger, greed, clinging, or pride, pulls you around the most?
