The Wealth That Fills Your Lap

Those who praise You gather the wealth in their laps; this is Nanak's wealth.

Whoever shows respect to them is not summoned by the Messenger of Death. ||4||3||

In plain words

Those who praise You gather wealth in their laps. Nanak says: that is my wealth.

Whoever shows them respect is not called away by the messenger of death.

Praise gathers the one treasure that death cannot take.
The deeper layer

Praising the One gathers the wealth that lasts.

TuDh saalaahan tin Dhan palai means "those who praise You have wealth in their laps." In those days, people carried precious things tied in the fold of their clothes. Naanak kaa Dhan so-ee means "that is Nanak's wealth too."

Think of a piggy bank that no one can ever break or empty. That is what praise gathers.

The last line says whoever honors such people is not called away by jam, the messenger of death. In the old stories, Yama was a scary figure who came for people at the end. The heart of this line is gentler. Being close to people who love the One loosens our fear of dying. Honoring them quietly sets us free.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable that no one could ever steal from you?
