Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 32
Verse 4 of 5

The Friend who stays when all others go

ਤਹਾ ਸਖਾਈ ਜਹ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
tahaa sakhaa-ee jah ko-ay na hovai.
He shall be your Helper and Support there, where no one else can help you.
ਕੋਟਿ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
kot apraaDh ik khin meh Dhovai.
He washes away millions of sins in an instant.
ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਪਛੋੁਤਾਵੈ ॥
daat karai nahee pachhotaavai.
He bestows His Gifts, and never regrets them.
ਏਕਾ ਬਖਸ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
aykaa bakhas fir bahur na bulaavai. ||3||
He forgives, once and for all, and never asks for one's account again. ||3||

In plain words

The One is your helper there, where no one else can help you.

The One washes away millions of wrongs in a single moment, like chalk off a slate.

The One gives gifts and never regrets giving them.

The One forgives once and for all, and never calls you to account again.

Full forgiveness wipes the slate clean and never brings it up again.
The deeper layer

The One stays beside you where no one else can, and forgives all the way, never bringing it up again.

"Kot apraaDh" (millions of faults) and "Dhovai" (washes) make cleansing, not punishment, the picture. "Aykaa bakhas fir bahur na bulaavai" — forgives once and never calls you to account again — is a picture of total, non-transactional grace. Self-condemnation has no foothold here; the whole weight falls on the completeness of the washing.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a mistake you keep replaying and holding against yourself? What would it feel like to let it be washed away?
