Everything, and the One Behind It

ਨਾਦ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਕੋਡ ਆਨੰਦਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਓ ॥
naad binod kod aanandaa sehjay sahj samaa-i-o.
| The Sound-current of the Naad, playful joys and pleasures - I am intuitively, easily absorbed into the Celestial Lord.
ਕਰਨਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਾਇਓ ॥੨॥੩੦॥੫੩॥
karnaa aap karaavan aapay kaho naanak aap aapaa-i-o. ||2||30||53||
He Himself is the Creator, the Cause of causes. Says Nanak, He Himself is All-in-all. ||2||30||53||

In plain words

Music, delight, all the countless little joys — I let myself settle gently into the One who is behind them all.

Nanak says: the One is the maker and the reason things happen at all, the source of everything. The One alone is showing up as everything you see.

The many joys of the world are the one reality, wearing many faces.
The deeper layer

The One is behind every joy, and in the end the One is everything.

Naad is the inner sound, like music heard from inside. Binod kod aanandaa means play, fun and every kind of joy. Sehjay sahj samaa-i-o means sinking, with total ease, into the One behind them all.

Karnaa aap karaavan aapay means the One does everything and makes everything happen. This points straight to Ik Onkar, "One Creator," the first words of the Guru Granth Sahib.

The One is not a maker standing off to one side, like a builder who walks away from a finished house. The One is the single reality showing up as all of it. Think of the ocean and its waves: many waves, one water.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a moment of delight and sense the bigger something it seemed to come from?
