Verse 3 of 5

Wandering a Long Time

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਬੀਤੀਅਨ ਭਰਮਾਈ ॥
anik janam beetee-an bharmaa-ee.
Countless lifetimes have passed away, wandering aimlessly.
ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੁਤਰ ਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
ghar vaas na dayvai dutar maa-ee. ||3||
The terrible, treacherous Maya does not even allow them to dwell in their own home. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A person can wander a very long time, going in circles, never quite arriving.

The pull of appearances keeps you restless, so you never fully settle into your own true home inside.

Chasing appearances keeps you restless and never quite home.
The deeper layer

anik janam beetee-an bharmaa-ee — countless lifetimes spent wandering; ghar vaas na dayvai dutar maa-ee — Maya, hard to cross, will not let one rest in one's own home. The 'home' is again the settled inner center.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel restless, and when do you feel truly at home?
