Verse 3 of 9

Why Grabbing and Quarreling Leave You Empty

ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਰੁੰਨਿਆ ॥
mohi baad ahaNkaar sarpar runni-aa.
Those who indulge in attachment, conflict and egotism shall surely weep and cry.
ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
sukh na paa-iniH mool naam vichhunni-aa. ||2||
Those who are separated from the Naam shall never find any peace. ||2||

In plain words

When I get lost in clinging, arguing, and puffing myself up, it leaves me hollow and unhappy. It happens every single time.

Cut off from the living presence of the One, peace just keeps slipping away.

Grabbing, quarreling, and showing off leave me hollow — reconnecting is the way back.
The deeper layer

This one means clinging, arguing and showing off leave us empty.

The first line names three things. Moh is clinging. Baad is arguing. Ahankaar is pride, puffing yourself up. The verse says those caught in them will surely end up in tears.

The second line says those cut off from the Name find no peace at all. Vichhunni-aa means cut off.

Think of winning an argument with a friend but feeling bad all evening. You won, but you lost your peace. These habits defeat themselves. The way back is to reconnect with the One.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how winning an argument sometimes leaves you feeling worse, not better?
