All the things that you see, O man, you shall have to leave behind.

Let your dealings be with the Lord's Name, and you shall attain the state of Nirvaanaa. ||1||

In plain words

Look around, friend — every single thing you can see, one day you will set down and leave behind.

So let your real dealings be with the Name, with the One — that is what carries you into deep, unshakable peace.

Hold lightly what you cannot keep; invest in what lasts.
The deeper layer

This one says: hold lightly what you can't keep.

Jaytee samagree daykhhu ray nar taytee hee chhad jaanee: all the things you see, friend, you will leave behind. Everything we collect is on loan. Think of a library book. You can love it, but one day it goes back.

This is not gloomy. It is clear. It helps us sort what passes from what lasts.

So raam naam sang kar bi-uhaaraa: do your real business with the Name. The Name is what lasts. And it brings pad nirbaanee, a settled freedom, a mind that has stopped grabbing.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only keep things that are not objects, what would you want most?
