Joy Lives in Getting Gentler, Not Bigger

ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੋ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
pi-aaray too mayro sukh-daata.
O my Beloved, You are the Giver of peace.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਆ ਉਪਦੇਸਾ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Perfect Guru has given me these Teachings, and I am attuned to You. ||Pause||
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh moh abhimaanaa taa meh sukh nahee paa-ee-ai.
In sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and self-conceit, peace is not to be found.

So be the dust of the feet of all, O my mind, and then you shall find bliss, joy and peace. ||2||

In plain words

Beloved One, You are where my peace comes from — my perfect teacher pointed me toward You, and now I am tuned to You like a string to its note.

There is no lasting peace inside anger, greed, grabbing, or showing off. So, my mind, become humble and gentle with everyone — that is where joy actually lives.

Joy does not live in getting bigger; it lives in getting gentler.
The deeper layer

This one says: joy lives in getting gentler, not bigger.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Pi-aaray too mayro sukh-daata: Beloved, You are my Giver of peace. Gur poorai, the perfect Guru, taught me this, and now I am tuned to You.

Then the verse is honest about the dead ends. Kaam kroDh lobh moh abhimaanaa: craving, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. None of them hold peace.

The cure is surprisingly humble: hohu rayn too sagal kee. Become the rayn, the dust, of everyone. It means lowering yourself to serve, like the kid who stays after the party to help clean up. This is not about letting others walk on you. It is choosing to lift others up. And then joy follows.

A Question to Sit With

Which of those feelings — anger, greed, showing off — tugs hardest at you, and what calms it?
