The Naam is my merchandise, the Naam is my nourishment; the Naam, O Nanak, is the Support of my breath of life. ||4||9||20||

In plain words

Kind One, Life of the whole universe, formless and everywhere at once!

Your Name is what I trade in. Your Name is my food. Your Name is the very breath that holds me up.

Let the thing you love most become the air you breathe.
The deeper layer

This one says: let the Name become the air you breathe.

The closing line stacks up loving names: gobid daamodar da-i-aal maaDhvay paarbarahm nirankaaraa. Each is a name for the One: the Lord of the world, the Kind One, the Highest, the One with no shape. It's like calling your grandmother Nani, Grandma, and "my favorite person." Many words, one person.

Then the Name becomes the whole of a life. Naam vartan: the Name is what I trade in. Naamo vaalayvaa: the Name is my food for the journey. Naam naanak paraan aDhaaraa: the Name holds up my very breath.

The Name is not one thing on a to-do list. It is the air the whole life moves through.

A Question to Sit With
