Verse 4 of 4

With Every Breath, a Song of Joy

ਹੋਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
ho-ay parabhoo sahaa-ee.
God became my helper and my best friend;
ਸਭ ਉਠਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
sabh uth laagee paa-ee.
everyone rises up and bows down at my feet.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
saas saas parabh Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
With each and every breath, meditate on God;
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੪॥੫੪॥
har mangal naanak gaa-ee-ai. ||4||4||54||
O Nanak, sing the songs of joy to the Lord. ||4||4||54||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One became my helper and my closest friend.

So with each breath I hold Him in mind, and let my life become a song of joy.

The simplest rhythm you already have -- your breath -- can become a kind of song.
The deeper layer

Saas saas prabh dhi-aa-ee-ai -- with each and every breath; remembrance woven into the most ordinary thing a body does. Har mangal gaa-ee-ai -- and out of that comes a song of joy. The literal's image of others bowing points to the honor the One quietly gives.

A Question to Sit With

Could you take three slow breaths and notice one thing you are glad about?
